A 19-year-old from a rice-farming village who can speak English on a stage in front of 200 people is a 19-year-old who can apply for a scholarship, take a job in tourism, or start a business that talks to the world. We give 24 such people each year a moment they will carry for the rest of their lives — and a cash prize that, for many of them, is more money than their family has held at one time.
