What to prepare.

Five minutes. One true story. Your own life. The judges score on three things — Truth, Voice, and Connection. Here's what each means.

Truth.

Did the thing you describe actually happen to you? Did you live it? Tell us a true story — the rougher and more specific the better. We are not impressed by perfect English. We are moved by a real human being telling us something real.

Voice.

Can we hear you — your real voice, your own way of speaking? You don't need a TV-anchor accent. You need to sound like yourself. Slow English with feeling beats fast English without it.

Connection.

Did you make the audience feel something? A laugh. A held breath. A tear. The point of telling a story is to take the audience somewhere with you. The judges feel it when you do.

A note on your English level.

If you can hold a 5-minute conversation in English, you are ready to enter. If you can't yet, we have a free EnglishTeacher.com partnership — try the practice tool, then come back. Past competitors include monks, motorbike taxi drivers, university students, grandmothers, and a 13-year-old. The competition is for everyone.
