Three rounds, all free

We cannot enter your child. Your school can.

งานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน is run by the Thai school system, and entries come from schools. A school signs in, enters the child, and names the coaching teacher on the form. There is no parent form, there never has been, and any website that offers you one is not the real thing.

So round one happens in a conversation at your school, not on this page. Round two is ours, and it is a video. Round three is Khon Kaen.

Round one · in person, judged by teachers

Ask the school to enter your child

Ask the English teacher, or the head of the foreign languages department (หัวหน้ากลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศ). Small schools sometimes do not enter anyone simply because nobody asked. Ask early — entries usually close three to four weeks before the date.

What to say, in Thai

อยากให้ลูกเข้าแข่งขันเล่านิทานภาษาอังกฤษ (Story Telling) งานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน ครั้งที่ 74 ต้องทำอย่างไรคะ

"I would like my child to enter the English Story Telling competition at the 74th Student Arts and Crafts Fair. What do I need to do?"

End with คะ if you are a woman and ครับ if you are a man. If your child is in ป.1–6 the school enters them through its สพป.; from ม.1 upward, through its สพม.

Free

There is no entry fee

Not to the school, not to the district, not to anybody. If a fee is being asked for, something is wrong and we would like to hear about it.

Band

Three bands, sometimes four

OBEC's criteria set three: ป.4–6 at five to six minutes, ม.1–3 at six to seven, ม.4–6 at seven to eight. A ป.1–3 event exists but not every district runs it. Only ป.4–6 qualifies for Khon Kaen in the first year.

Gold

Gold is a score, not a place

80 points and above out of OBEC's hundred is a gold medal, and more than one child in a room can take one. Sixty of those hundred points are the English itself. Every ป.4–6 gold medalist may send us a video.

Round two · closes March 31, 2027

Send us one video

This is how the ten finalists are chosen for Khon Kaen. It is a video and not a second live round on purpose: a second journey on a school day selects for families who can afford the journey, and that is the exact thing this competition exists to stop.

What the video has to be

  1. The same story the child told at their district round.
  2. One take, no editing. If it stops and starts, it does not count. A phone is perfectly good.
  3. Hold the phone sideways and stand far enough back that the whole child is in frame, head to feet. Judges are marking how a child stands and moves, not just the voice.
  4. Somewhere quiet enough to hear every word. A classroom after school is ideal. An electric fan two meters from the phone is not.
  5. Five to six minutes, the ป.4–6 band, with thirty seconds' grace either side.
  6. Nothing on screen but the child. No captions, no music, no title card, no school name showing. Judging is blind.

What to send with it

  1. The child's first name and age band.
  2. The school's name and the district office (for example, สพป.สุรินทร์ เขต 2). This is for checking the gold medal, and the judges never see it.
  3. The coaching teacher's name. They are being entered for a prize too.
  4. A line from a parent or guardian saying they are happy for the child to enter.

What we do with it, exactly

The panel sees a number, an age band and a story. They do not see the child's school, district, family name or photograph. We check the gold medal with the school separately, before judging, not during it.

We do not publish any child's video anywhere unless a parent tells us in writing that we may, and that permission can be withdrawn at any time by sending us one line. We do not sell, share, or hand any of it to anybody. When the championship is over, videos from children who did not ask to be published are deleted.

There are ten places and there will be far more than ten gold medalists, so most children who send a video will not travel. Every entrant gets their scores back through their school either way — that is the part we can actually promise.

One stage, one afternoon, an audience, three judges and OBEC's hundred-point rubric. Return travel, two nights' hotel and every meal are paid for the child, one family member and the coaching teacher — bought by us, never reimbursed. Prize money is handed over on the night. The coaching is free too

Fifty lesson plans for building a storyteller, in English and Thai, from choosing the story to standing still while you tell it. The judges' score sheet, so a child can be marked at home on the same 100 points they will face on the day. And a ten-week pronunciation clinic a teacher can run from one phone.
